Citipati Tibetan mask in wood , 30 cm , made in Himalaya

"The skull mask, called Citipati in Sanskrit, is one of the most emblematic symbols of Tibetan Buddhism. It represents the two meditative states of clarity and emptiness.

The term 'citipati' literally means 'Lord of funerals'. This mask with its exaggerated features symbolises death and impermanence, but also spiritual liberation. It is worn during Buddhist rituals, particularly in the Kagyüpa school, and used as a support for meditation.

The skull is a reminder of the fleeting nature of existence. Contemplating this mask allows us to reflect on impermanence and detach ourselves from earthly attachments."

"Cham dance is performed exclusively by lamas, Tibetan Buddhist monks.

This dance, also known as the "divine dance", is a colourful and impressive spectacle. The dance has a religious significance for the participants, who perform a form of meditation for their audience."
