Large Phrenology Bust – L.N. Fowler, London – 42 cm

Large Phrenology Bust – L.N. Fowler, London – 42 cm

A large decorative phrenology bust bearing the inscription L.N. Fowler, 237 Strand, London.

Phrenology was a 19th-century pseudoscience based on the belief that the shape and contours of the skull could reveal a person's character, personality and intellectual abilities. The head was divided into different regions, each associated with specific faculties and traits such as ambition, spirituality, benevolence, self-esteem and combativeness.

This fascinating bust illustrates the historical theories of phrenology and makes a striking addition to any cabinet of curiosities, medical collection or collection of antique scientific objects.
